Success in life is the aim of the game for so many – professionally, personally or, ideally, both. The beginning of a relationship is full of exhilaration, anticipation, and butterflies in your stomach. Some people may say the same feeling is achieved while crushing goals on their career path.

Unfortunately, the pressure to maintain both a successful career and a happy relationship simultaneously can be too much at times- ultimately leading to the compromise of one or the other. Let’s explore if you really can have it all or if it’s inevitable that you’ll have to choose one or the other.

Work-love balance

As a matchmaker, one of the most common reasons I hear for the end of a relationship or lack of relationships, in general, tends to stem from something career-related. Either an individual was too busy growing their business to spend time on a relationship or their partner was not understanding of their hectic work schedule.

Research suggests, however, that if two partners are both working with similar career aspirations, the less time spent together does not have a negative impact on their relationship.

This may seem counterintuitive, but this research has revealed that extended workdays are not detrimental to romantic relationships. Generally, couples that both have busy schedules, on average, actually made more of an effort in the time available to spend with their partner which ultimately led to a happier relationship.

I believe there are three key necessities in maintaining a taxing career while nurturing your romantic relationship:

  • Respect – Respecting your partner for their decisions, their ambition, and dedication to their career is important. There also needs to be mutual respect to carve out time for one another amidst your busy schedules.
  • Growth Mindset– Successful people tend to value personal development and growth. Just because you’re in a relationship doesn’t mean personal improvement needs to come to a stop. If you’re with someone who truly loves you, they’ll want what’s best for you, thus taking joy in your growth and success.
  • Trust – Trust is essential in any relationship. It is especially important for two people who have less time to spend together due to their demanding careers or work-related travel. Trusting that your partner is choosing to be in a relationship with you even though it’s not always easy is important for a long-lasting relationship.

Making it work

Juggling a consuming career and a serious relationship comes with its challenges. In the past, you may have had to sacrifice love for that promotion. But is it possible? Of course! Several of our success stories are relationships formed between two highly career-oriented individuals. If both people are willing to put in time and effort to spend quality time together, there’s no need to compromise love for your career or vice versa!

This article is an interesting read and discusses how dual-career couples make it work.
