1. Avoid texting too much before the first date

Meeting someone in person for the first time can be a little awkward. You might be thinking that getting to know each other via text may seem like an easy way to break the ice. This plan can, unfortunately, backfire. Frequent digital communication, before meeting face-to-face, can leave you scrambling for conversation topics on the first date, which might hinder the possibility of forming a connection.

Another issue with texting is the risk of miscommunication. It’s impossible to portray facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice in a text message. Thus, the true meaning behind a message can be easily misconstrued, leading to invalid assumptions about your date before they’ve had the chance to make a first impression.

  1. Dress to impress, but don’t overdo it

Putting some effort into your appearance will show your date that you respect them but it’s also important that you look and feel like yourself, not what you think you’re supposed to look like on a date. We suggest wearing something stylish that shows off your personality. Be mindful of the venue’s vibe as well – showing up to a dive bar in high heels and a cocktail dress would be overkill.

If you are unsure what to wear, checking out the venue online to see if they have a dress code, may be helpful. Ultimately, the most important thing is that you wear something that will make you feel comfortable and confident.

Bonus tip: if you’re coming straight from work, bring a change of clothes and change before your date. This quick wardrobe adjustment will help you reset and relax after a long day at the office.

  1. Be on time

Think arriving fashionably late is still fashionable? Trust me, it’s not. If you’re worried that showing up on time will make you seem overeager or desperate, it won’t. Showing up late to concrete plans can make the other person feel unimportant or give off the impression that you’re a flaky person. If unexpected circumstances, like traffic, prevent you from being on time, don’t panic. Just be sure to contact your date and explain the situation. Even if it’s not your fault, a simple apology for making them wait will show that you respect them and their time.

  1. Keep the conversation light

First dates are supposed to be fun. You should be spending this time getting to know one another amidst casual conversation. Try to avoid discussing any topics that may be too intimate or controversial. If you sense your date is uncomfortable with a certain topic, change the subject to something less sensitive. Do not, under any circumstances, even if they ask you about it, talk about your ex! The first date should be about new beginnings, so keep past relationships in the past.

  1. Have realistic expectations

If you’ve ever left a first date thinking “It went really well, but there wasn’t much of a spark” – this is completely normal! One of the most important pieces of information I can offer is that chemistry often doesn’t develop until the second or even third date. First dates can be nerve-wracking and your date may have been nervous. If you had an overall good time and there were no major red flags, it is always my recommendation to go on a second date. The assumption that you’ll know right away if someone is “the one” can lead to disappointment. Don’t give up on someone with potential just because you didn’t see stars and fireworks upon meeting them for the first time.
