In a recent blog post, we shared our Dating Safety Rule Book which has the ins and outs of safely dating, whether that is online, through matchmaking or organically.

A recent Forbes article found that “The three most common problem areas, according to research, were:

  • People lying and misrepresenting themselves
  • People setting up spam accounts or engaging in other illicit behavior and
  • People receiving uninvited sexually explicit messages and images.”

Some of these might sound obvious if you’ve ever experienced these situations first-hand. Or you may be one of many that downloaded an app during the pandemic to simply connect with other life forms. Either way we want this to be your reminder to always be conscientious of the uncertainties on the internet.

Dating safety brought to light in the recent documentary The Tinder Swindler

Ranked in Netflix’s Top 10, The Tinder Swindler is a brand-new documentary which has received a lot of traction around the hunt for Simon Leviev and his several other aliases. Now notoriously known as the Tinder Swindler, (incoming spoiler alert) Simon used the app to entice women with his high-flying and luxurious lifestyle.

Claiming he was the ‘Prince of Diamonds’, Simon showered women with private jets, caviar, over-the-top bouquets and attention. Once he gained the trust of his victims, he would then establish lines of credit and loans in their names. ultimately leaving the women responsible for his debt.

In 2019, Leviev was sentenced to 15 months in prison after being swindled himself by one of his “girlfriends” who became aware of his scheme. He was released after only 5 months from Israeli prison and his current location has yet to be determined.

As matchmaking experts, our goal is to equip you with the tools you need for dating safety and success. Under the right conditions and with good intentions, Tinder is still a great platform to meet singles and it even holds the potential for forming significant relationships. Take it from Cecilie Fjellhoy, a victim of Leviev and continues to use the app to find love, “Tinder has nothing to do with this – I was back on Tinder immediately.”

It is unfortunate that dating apps designed to build meaningful connections are at times mishandled by some users. Although this is an extreme case, it does bring to light the pitfalls of using dating platforms.
